An open, community-driven and centrally hosted Foodsoft platform

Dear Foodsoft groups, especially those currently using app.foodcoops.net,

as you know, the Foodsoft hosting at foodcoops.net will end this month. But what does that mean?

Benni, who maintained the services over the last years, has no resources for it anymore. Caused by that the current app.foodcoops.net will be shut down and all food co-ops using that service need to find a new hosting provider and transferring their data to them.

We, a small group of people from various food co-ops consisting of Willem from the Netherlands, Patrick from Austria and André from Germany see the problem and suggest the following:

For German and Dutch food cooperatives (and others)

We want to develop a sustainable process where the users of the Foodsoft-using food cooperatives are maintaining and developing the infrastructure and their software. Basically the online ecosystem needs to be driven by these folks instead of unknown third parties.

We are interested to work with you to build an open, community-driven and centrally hosted Foodsoft platform, which will be in place for existing and new food co-ops. This not only involves the software! It’s also about bringing the people from the cooperatives together to exchange information, discuss topics and help each other. The new online platform will help us to do so.

What we need and expect from each group

• A permanent contact person plus a fallback person to be able to get in contact with your food co-op easily (that needs to be part of your co-op task list)
  
• If you have members in your group that are interested in information technology, please ask them if they want to contribute to the central platform to bring in their skills
  
• A (small) fee to pay the hardware, electricity etc.
  
• Helping to create a forum where the members of various food co-op discuss topics, answering support questions etc.

The next steps (for food co-ops which do not want to use the Austrian hosting)

• The current hardware and infrastructure (at app.foodcoops.net) will be shut down, therefore we have to migrate your data to our new systems.
  
• Very Important To-Do: You have to send an email to [hidden email] (plus CC to [hidden email]) that your group wants to transition as laid out here. Tell your group name which can be identified by your Foodsoft internet address e.g. https://app.foodcoops.net/schalottchen. The group name in this example is "schalottchen". The email should contain the title "Transition (your group name) to foodcoops.nl".  If you don't send an email, you agree that no data will be handed over to us.
  
• Co-ops, which agreed to the transition, will be migrated and hosted by a new IT team which is currently forming (Willem, André and more). Please send us an email to [hidden email] if you want to join. The transition will start end of July beginning of August. (The current Foodsoft will be hosted until we migrated everyone who contacted us.)
  

For the Austrian food cooperatives

In Austria an alternative hosting provider is already set under https://app.foodcoops.at/. It will be maintained by a working group of the upcoming “IG FoodCoops” and therefore integrated in the same structure, which will be used for all other food co-op related issues in Austria. Martin and Patrick from Austria are already in contact with most of the Austrian cooperatives since months and cleared up the process for most of them already.

If there was no communication about the Foodsoft transition yet, please contact them via [hidden email] with the wish for transition. If you want to continue with your existing data (users, suppliers, articles, ...) you need to write a mail to [hidden email] with the wish for handing over the existing data to Martin/Patrick from Austria and put [hidden email] into CC if you haven't done it yet.

It’s also possible for non-Austrian food co-ops to use the infrastructure, but it will cost 2EUR/user/year. The money which exceeds the hosting costs will be used to promote the idea of food cooperatives (e.g. with flyers, discussion forums) in Austria.

Why is there a different hosting for Austrians and others? Austrian food co-ops already built an environment, processes and infrastructure which works basically how we wish to have it on a global level. The Austrian platform is a national platform, which provides various tools, like Foodsoft (ordering and more), Discourse (forum in German) and others, and may provide information of interest specifically for the region or country. So we can learn from the Austrian groups.

Liebe Foodsoft-nutzenden Lebensmittelkooperativen,

wie ihr bereits mitbekommen habt, wird das Foodsoft-Hosting auf foodcoops.net Ende diesen Monats eingestellt. Was bedeutet das für euch?

Benni, der über die vergangenen Jahre diesen Dienst pflegte, hat keine Kapazitäten mehr dafür. Deshalb wird der Dienst app.foodcoops.net eingestellt und alle Foodcoops die diese Software benutzen, müssen einen neuen Anbieter bzw. eine Lösung dafür finden und ihr Daten transferieren.

Wir, eine kleine Gruppe aus verschiedenen Foodcoops bestehend aus Willem aus den Niederlanden, Patrick aus Österreich und André aus Deutschland, haben uns dem Problem angenommen und schlagen folgendes vor:

Für deutsche und niederländische Foodcoops (und andere)

Wir wollen einen nachhaltigen Prozess entwickeln woran sich die Benutzer der Foodsoft-benutzenden Lebensmittelgemeinschaften bei Wartung und Weiterentwicklung der Online-Platform beteiligen. Anders ausgedrückt, das Online-Ökosystem sollte von diesen Benutzern angetrieben werden und nicht von unbekannten Dritten.

Wir sind daran interessiert mit euch zusammen an einer offenen, gemeinschaftsorientierten und zentral bereitgestellten Foodsoft-Platform zu arbeiten. Sie ist für existierende und neue Foodcoops da. Das beinhaltet nicht nur Software, sondern es geht auch darum die verschieden Menschen aus der Lebensmittelkooperativen zusammen zu bringen um Informationen auszutauschen, Themen zu diskutieren und sich gegenseitig zu helfen. Die neue Online-Lösung soll dabei helfen das zu erreichen.

Was wir von euch brauchen und erwarten

• Eine ständige Kontaktperson sowie Ersatzperson um mit eurer Kooperative schnell in Kontakt treten zu können (das gehört dann zu euren Aufgaben stets eine(n) Ansprechpartner/in (plus Ersatz) bereitzustellen)
• Bitte fragt die Mitglieder in euerer Foodcoop ob sie Interesse haben uns bei der technischen Arbeit zu unterstützen
• Eine (kleine) Gebühr für die Bezahlung der Hardware, Elektrizität etc.
  
• Hilfe bei der Schaffung eines Forums, wo sich Mitglieder der verschiedenen Lebensmittelgemeinschaften austauschen können etc.
  

Was sind die nächsten Schritte die zu tun sind (für Foodcoops die nicht das österreichische Angebot nutzen)

• Die aktuelle Hardware und Infrastruktur (auf app.foodcoops.net) wird heruntergefahren, deshalb müssen wir eure Daten auf unsere neuen Systeme übertragen.
  
• Eine wichtige Aufgabe für euch: Ihr musst eine E-Mail an [hidden email] (plus CC an [hidden email]) schicken, dass eure Gruppe unser Angebot nutzen möchte. Dafür brauchen wir euren Gruppennamen, den ihr über eure aktuelle Foodsoft-Internetadresse herausbekommt. Zum Beispiel, wenn eure Adresse https://app.foodcoops.net/schalottchen lautet, dann ist euer Gruppenname "schalottchen". Die E-Mail sollte den Titel "Transition (euer Gruppenname) to foodcoops.nl" enthalten.
• Wenn ihr uns keine E-Mail sendet, werden uns eure Daten nicht übermittelt werden.
  
• Kooperativen, die dem Übergang zustimmen, werden in Zukunft von einem neuen IT-Team, das sich derzeit bildet (Willem, André und mehr), betreut. Bitte sendet uns dafür eine E-Mail an [hidden email] wenn ihr mitmachen wollt. Der Übergang beginnt Ende Juli / Anfang August. (Die aktuelle Foodsoft wird weiterhin bereitgestellt bis wir alle, die uns kontaktiert haben, auf unsere Systeme übertragen haben.)
  

Für die österreichischen Foodcoops

In Österreich ist bereits ein alternativer Hosting-Provider unter https://foodcoops.at/ verfügbar. Die Arbeitsgruppe "IG FoodCoops" wartet diese Online-Präsenz und ist in der gleichen Struktur integriert, die für alle anderen Lebensmittelkooperationen in Österreich genutzt wird. Martin und Patrick aus Österreich sind bereits seit Monaten mit den meisten österreichischen Kooperativen in Kontakt und haben den Prozess schon für diese geklärt.

Wenn es noch keine Kommunikation über die Foodsoft-Übertragung gab, wendet euch bitte an [hidden email] mit dem Wunsch auf foodcoops.at zu wechseln. Wenn ihr mit euren vorhandenen Daten fortfahren möchtet (Benutzer, Lieferanten, Artikel, ...), müsst ihr eine E-Mail an [hidden email] plus CC an [hidden email] schreiben, damit eure vorhandenen Daten an Martin und Patrick aus Österreich übergeben werden, wenn das bis jetzt noch nicht geschehen ist.

Es ist auch möglich, dass nicht-österreichische Lebensmittelgemeinschaften diese Infrastruktur nutzen, aber es wird 2 Euro pro Benutzer pro Jahr kosten. Das Geld, das die Hosting-Kosten übersteigt, wird genutzt, um die Idee von Foodcoops (z. B. mit Flyern, Diskussionsforen) in Österreich zu fördern.

Warum gibt es mehrere Hosting-Angebote für Österreicher und andere? Die österreichischen Lebensmittelkooperativen haben bereits eine Umgebung, Prozesse und Infrastrukturen aufgebaut, die im Grunde so funktionieren, wie wir wir uns das auf globaler Ebene wünschen. Die österreichische Lösung ist eine nationale Online-Plattform, die verschiedene Werkzeuge wie Foodsoft (Bestellung und mehr), Discourse (deutschsprachig) und anderes sowie Informationen für die Regionen und das Land bereitstellt. Diese ist jedoch auf die deutsche Sprache und österreichische Themen fokussiert.

Wir können mit Sicherheit etwas von den österreichischen Foodcoops für die neue globale Online-Lösung lernen.

Hallo André, Wilhelm und Patrick,

Super, ich war schon recht verzweifelt, da ich keinen Kontakt zu Benni herstellen konnte. Ich unterstütze Euer Projekt gerne und bin an einer langfristigen Lösung und Zusammenarbeit sehr interressiert.
Ich bin der Admin und technische Ansprechpartner in unserer Foodcoop. Meine Mailadresse ist [e-mail]. Mein Ersatz ist Niels, [e-mail]. .

Genre können wir einen Beitrag zu den anfallenden Kosten beisteuern. Ich hatte dabei eher an eine umsatzabhängige Variante gedacht, dann ist es etwas fairer zwischen den Mitgliedern… Aber das ist nur ein Detail…

Leider geht der hidden Maillinks für den Umzug der Daten unserer Foodsoft und dem Kontakt zu dem neuen IT.Team bei mir nicht. Weder in der Mail noch im Forum nach Anmeldung.Unser Gruppenname ist " Hessenhagen „. (https://app.foodcoops.net/hessenhagen/login)

Ich kann leider nicht in Ruby/Rails schreiben, aber kann mir vorstellen ein gemeinsames deutsches Wiki für alle Foodcoops mit zu pflegen um mal eine gute Anleitung der Software zu schafften.

Hi Carsten, thank you for your reply. If you've sent the identical email to both addresses, it's fine (we got one at [e-mail]). Still I've sent you the original email (with email addresses), just in case.
Good input, how we distribute any costs is something to figure out. And I agree documentation could be improved, great idea :)

And a short general update:
* 29 have expressed an interest to move, of which 13 groups sent a migration mail to foodcoops.net.
* 20 of those are in Austria, and will move to foodcoops.at, the rest to the new global instance.
* There are 12 or more groups that we don't have contact with.
* An IT-team is forming, with members from different coops, to support the shared global infrastructure. If you're interested to join, please mail to [e-mail] (or else reply here).
